About the Role
Position: Postdoctoral Research Associate & Staff Scientist
Lab: Chen Ultrasound Lab, affiliated with the Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Neurosurgery
Location: Washington University in St. Louis
Funding: NIH Pioneer Award
In this position, you’ll play a crucial role in developing an ultrasound-induced artificial hibernation technique, an innovative approach made possible through our recent discovery that ultrasound stimulation of hypothalamic neurons can safely, noninvasively, and reversibly lower metabolism and body temperature in animal models.
What You Will Be Doing
Join a diverse, interdisciplinary team at the forefront of research integrating ultrasound engineering, systems neuroscience, physiology, molecular biology, brain functional imaging, and behavioral analysis. Your work will contribute to exploring three core questions:
- Mechanistic Exploration: What are the molecular, cellular, neural circuit, and systemic mechanisms underlying ultrasound-induced artificial hibernation?
- Therapeutic Potential: How effective is ultrasound-induced artificial hibernation in treating diseases?
- Translational Research: Can this technique be applied to large animals, paving the way for future human applications?
What We’re Looking For
We’re seeking candidates who are:
- Innovative and Bold: Ready to challenge conventions and take on ambitious research questions.
- Collaborative: Thriving in a team environment with a range of expertise.
- Expertise-Driven: Holding a Ph.D. in relevant fields such as neuroscience, metabolism, large-animal research, ultrasound devices, or ultrasound imaging.
What We Offer
- Mentorship and Development: Dr. Hong Chen, recipient of the 2024 Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award, provides mentorship and career support, fostering your growth alongside a team of field-leading experts.
- Cutting-Edge Facilities: Conduct your research in the newly built, 11-floor Neuroscience Research Building at WashU, the largest in the U.S.
Further Information
- Employment: Full-time, initially for 12 months, with the potential for extension.
- Compensation: Salary aligned with NIH guidelines
- Postdoc Benefits: Additional information can be found at WashU Postdoc Office.
